When a song is shared, everyone in it can talk to the band right where the music is. It all lives in Backstage: a group Chat, Comments pinned to the exact moment you mean, and a People list that shows who is here.
Comments and chat work in the desktop app, on the web and on your phone. They are not shown in Live Mode. On a phone, see On your phone.
Click the avatars at the top of a shared song. The Backstage panel opens on the right with three tabs: Chat, Comments and People. You can also click a comment balloon on the timeline to open it straight on that conversation.
On a computer, Backstage sits next to the song instead of on top of it: the tracks move over to make room, so you can keep playing and editing while it is open. To give you more space, the menu on the left closes when Backstage opens, and it stays closed until you open it again with the ☰ button. CueWee remembers your choice the next time you come back. Close Backstage with the ✕ at the top of the panel or with Esc.
In a narrow window (under 1200 pixels wide), there is not enough room for the song next to a panel, so Backstage and the menu on the left open on top of the song instead. Click outside the menu to close it.
A small dot on the avatars means there are new chat messages you have not read yet.
The Chat tab is a group chat for everyone who has access to the song. Use it to talk about this song: a chord you are not sure about, who plays the intro, a change in the last chorus. Type in the box at the bottom and press Enter.
You can edit or delete your own messages. Click the More button on a message.
If a message does not go through, you see "Could not send." with a Retry button.
When the owner removes someone, the chat shows "Name no longer has access". If they are added back, it shows "Name has access again".
When someone opens the song for the first time after the conversation started, the chat shows "Name joined" at that point. That way everyone, including the newcomer, can see which messages came before they arrived. It does not light the unread dot.
A comment is a note for the band pinned to a moment, a region, or a whole section. You can also pin it to one track, for example "the bass is late here".
On the timeline, comments show as small balloons with the photo of who wrote them. Hover a balloon to see a preview. Click it to open the conversation and jump the song to that spot.
A comment on a whole section has its balloon on the Guide track, right above the start of the section. The section lights up while you write the comment and when you point at it in Backstage.
Right click the timeline or a track and choose Add comment.
Use the comment tool, the balloon pointer next to the cursor, razor and mute tools (shortcut 4). Click for a point, or drag for a region. As you move the mouse, a line follows it to show where the comment will land. While it is on, the rest of the timeline stops reacting, so every click becomes a comment.
Right click a section and choose Comment on section.
Select a stretch of the timeline, open its tools menu and choose Comment on selection.
A small box for your note opens right where you placed the comment, and Backstage stays closed. Write your note and press Enter to post it, or Esc to cancel.
Anyone in the song can reply to a comment. Once there are replies, a small number on the balloon shows how many messages the conversation has.
Authors can edit or delete their own comments. The owner of the song can delete any comment. There is no "resolve": notes stay until someone deletes them.
To point someone to a comment, open the More menu on it and choose Copy link. Whoever opens the link lands on the song with Backstage open on that comment, in the browser or straight in the CueWee app on their phone. They need access to the song to see it.
The Comments tab lists every note pinned on the song, in the order they appear in the song. Use Filter by track to see only the notes on one track, and click a comment to jump to it.
Open the Tools ⚙ menu in the player (the same menu as Set tracks L/R and Reset tracks) and turn off Show comments. The balloons and the comment tool disappear from every song, so you can see the timeline clean. The choice is saved to your account.
Answer a message or a comment without typing. Click the smiley under it and pick one of six emojis: 👍 ❤️ 😂 🎉 😮 🙏. Each emoji shows how many people used it, and yours is highlighted. Hover an emoji to see who reacted. Click your own emoji again to take it back.
Reactions work on chat messages, comments and replies. They do not send notifications.
Type @ in the chat, a comment or a reply, and a list of the people in the song appears. Keep typing to narrow it down, then click a name or press Enter or Tab to add it. Esc closes the list and keeps what you typed.
The name shows highlighted in the message, and when it is you, it stands out even more. The person you mention gets a notification saying you mentioned them, if they have notifications turned on. See Notifications.
Everything works on your phone too, with a few changes to fit the screen. You need to be online: without a connection, the avatars and the comment button stay hidden.
Avatars in the header. When other people are in the song, their avatars take the place of the Live button at the top. Live Mode moves into the ⋮ menu. Tap the avatars to open Backstage.
Backstage opens from the bottom. It has the same Chat, Comments and People tabs. Swipe it down to close it.
Add a comment with a tap. Open the track controls and tap the balloon button next to the tempo button. The controls close and a message asks you to tap where you want to comment. Tap a track for a note on that track, or tap the ruler at the top for a note on the whole song. Scrolling still works, so you can move around first. Tap ✕ on the message to cancel.
A box opens right next to the spot you tapped, and a dashed balloon marks where the comment will go.
